The REC Player Waiver and Code of Conduct
Last updated: 21 September 2026
This is the waiver and code of conduct for The REC, our organised recreational basketball season for adults. Read it before you tick the box that says you agree to it. We have kept it short and plain so that players, parents and guardians can read it without a lawyer.
1. What this document is
This is an agreement between you and The Community League, Ltd., based in Kigali, Rwanda. We also go by TCL or The Community League.
When you tick I agree to the player waiver and code of conduct during registration, you are agreeing to everything on this page. We record the date and time you agreed and which version of this page was live when you did.
This page sits alongside our Terms of Service and does not replace it. It applies to The REC. It does not cover Ukurikira or The House League, which have their own arrangements.
2. This season, and only this season
This agreement covers your participation in The REC for the season you are registering for, Season 4. It does not carry over. Every season we ask you to read and agree to the waiver and code of conduct again, and to sign the season's form again, because rules, venues and this page can all change between seasons.
The REC is for adults. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must agree to this on your behalf and sign the season's form with you. Where that is the case, everything on this page that says "you" applies to the parent or guardian as the person registering, and to the player.
3. Basketball involves risk, and you accept it
Basketball is a contact sport played fast on a hard surface. The REC is played full contact. Players collide, fall, land badly and get hit by the ball. Injuries happen, from sprained ankles and jammed fingers to broken bones, head injuries and, in rare cases, serious, permanent or fatal harm. Outdoor courts add heat, sun, dust, rain and uneven ground. Indoor venues have their own hazards, including hard walls close to the court and floors that can be slippery. No coach, referee or organiser can remove these risks.
By registering and taking the court you accept these risks and you play at your own risk. You accept that other players can cause you harm without meaning to, and that a referee's presence does not prevent it. Our Disclaimer sets out the same risks and applies to you as well.
4. You confirm you are fit to play
You confirm that you are in good enough health to take part in full contact basketball, and that no doctor has told you not to. If you have a medical condition, an old injury, an allergy, or anything at all that could matter on court, see a doctor before you play and tell a member of TCL staff what we should know. Tell us if that changes during the season.
You are responsible for deciding whether you are fit enough to play, on the day and every day. Stop and tell someone if you feel unwell. Wear proper athletic footwear at every session. Bare feet, sandals and street shoes are not allowed on court.
5. Medical care, insurance and emergencies
TCL does not provide medical care, medical insurance or accident insurance to participants. We are not a medical service. Arranging your own medical or accident cover is your responsibility, and any medical bill following an injury at a TCL session is yours to pay. We strongly recommend that you do not take part without cover in place.
You authorise TCL staff to arrange first aid, an ambulance or medical treatment for you if you are injured at a session and cannot make that decision yourself. You accept that we will do our best to reach the contact you gave us, and that we may have to act before we do. Getting you help does not make us responsible for your treatment or for what it costs.
What we do with the health and contact information you give us is set out in our Privacy Policy.
6. Release, and limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the laws of Rwanda allow, you release The Community League, Ltd., its directors, staff, coaches, referees, volunteers and partners from liability for injury, loss or damage arising from your participation in The REC, including injuries that come from the ordinary risks of playing basketball, the acts of other participants, the condition of a venue we do not own or control, and personal property lost, damaged or stolen at a session. You agree not to bring a claim against us for those things, to the extent the law allows you to give that up.
Nothing in this document limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our own gross negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that Rwandan law does not allow us to limit. If a court decides that any part of this section cannot be enforced, the rest of it still stands.
If a claim is brought against TCL because you broke this agreement, broke the code of conduct, or injured someone or damaged property through your own deliberate or reckless act, you agree to cover the reasonable costs we face as a result, to the extent Rwandan law allows.
7. Photos, video and your likeness
We film and photograph our sessions and games, and we publish that content on TCL social media, on this website, and in material promoting The REC and TCL. By agreeing to this document you give us permission to use your image, likeness, voice, name and playing footage from this season for those purposes, without payment to you.
This permission is given for good and cannot be withdrawn. Content we have already produced, published or placed under it stays covered, and we are not required to unpublish, recall or destroy it.
The season's signed form contains the media release that governs our right to use your image from this season, and this section is the same permission given online. Where the two differ, the signed form governs. For a player under 18, this permission comes from the parent or guardian.
Separately from that permission, we will respect any reasonable and feasible request to take a photo or video of you down from our own channels. Ask us on Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp, or write to the address at the bottom of this page. We cannot always pull back something another person has already downloaded or reshared, and content already printed or placed with a partner may take longer to withdraw or may not be withdrawable at all. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
8. Paying for your season
Paying is what holds your spot. Registering does not reserve a place. Spots are held in the order payments arrive, and a league can fill before you pay. Full payment is required before you take part, and unpaid registrations can be cancelled.
Where you choose to pay a deposit rather than the full amount, the deposit terms for your league are shown to you at the payment step and agreed there separately. Those terms are the ones that apply to you; this page does not restate them and does not change them.
Being removed from The REC for breaking the code of conduct does not entitle you to a refund of anything you have paid.
9. The code of conduct
The REC is a community space. When you are at a TCL session, at a venue we are using, or in a TCL group chat, you agree to:
- respect players, coaches, referees, staff, venue staff and neighbours;
- play hard and play fair, and accept the decisions of referees and officials, on the court and after the game;
- wear proper athletic footwear on court, every session, no exceptions;
- keep away from violence, threats, fighting, harassment, discrimination and abusive language, in person and in our group chats;
- stay off drugs and alcohol at sessions, and stay away if you have been drinking;
- look after the courts, equipment and the venue, and pay for what you deliberately break;
- follow the rules of whatever venue we are using;
- play as yourself, in the league you registered for, and never in someone else's place;
- tell a member of TCL staff when someone is hurt, or when something is unsafe.
If you disagree with a call, take it up with TCL staff after the game. Arguing with a referee during a game is not how anything gets fixed here.
10. What happens if you break it
We can warn you, suspend you for one or more games, suspend you for the rest of the season, or remove you from The REC and from our group chats. Which one depends on what happened and on what has happened before. Serious incidents, including violence, threats and playing under someone else's identity, can mean immediate removal without a warning first.
We write down incidents, warnings and suspensions so that decisions stay consistent and fair between players, and those records are covered by our Privacy Policy. If you think a decision was wrong, tell us and we will hear you out. A decision about the rest of a season is made by TCL and is final for that season.
Removal for conduct does not entitle you to a refund. It does not stop you asking to register for a later season, unless we tell you otherwise.
11. The form you sign each season
Agreeing to this page online does not replace the waiver and release form you sign for the season. Players in The REC still sign that form, and it is still signed each season. Agreeing here is what lets you complete registration; signing the form is what we keep as the signed record.
The form covers the same ground as this page and asks for your name, date of birth, phone number, email address, signature and the date. Read it properly before you sign it. Where the signed form and this page say different things, the signed form governs. This page sits alongside it and does not replace it, cut it down, or add conditions to it. The same rule appears in our Terms of Service and applies the same way.
12. Governing law, and how we sort things out
This agreement is governed by the laws of the Republic of Rwanda.
If something goes wrong, talk to us first. Most things get sorted with a phone call. If the season's signed form sets out a process for resolving disputes, follow that process. Where no signed form covers it, the dispute goes to the competent courts of Kigali, Rwanda.
If a part of this agreement turns out to be unenforceable, the rest of it still stands. We may update this page between seasons, and the date at the top shows the version that is live. The version you agreed to is the one recorded with your registration.
