Terms of Service

1. Agreeing to these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and The Community League, Ltd., a basketball organisation based in Kigali, Rwanda. We also go by TCL or The Community League.

They apply when you use thecommunityleague.com and when you take part in any TCL program, including Ukurikira, The REC, and The House League. If you register someone else, for example your child, they apply to you as the person registering and to the participant. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site or take part in our programs.

2. What this website is

The site is here to tell you about TCL, our programs and our schedule. It is information only. You cannot create an account, register, or pay on it. When you want to sign up, we send you to a form or a WhatsApp group outside the site. We may add on-site registration and online payment later, and when we do, the terms for those will be published before they go live.

3. Our programs

  • Ukurikira is free street and pickup basketball. It is open to anyone, walk-up, with no fee and no registration needed to play.
  • The REC is organised recreational basketball for adults, run in seasons. It is played full contact, at indoor and outdoor venues.
  • The House League is coached youth basketball with weekly sessions. It has not launched yet.

4. Who can take part

Each program has its own eligibility rules, such as age group, division and season dates, and we publish those with the program. You must meet the rules of the program you join. We can ask for proof of age or identity and we can turn down or cancel a registration that does not meet the rules.

You are responsible for deciding whether you are healthy enough to play. Please see our Disclaimer before you take the court.

5. Minors and parent or guardian consent

A person under 18 cannot register themselves. A parent or legal guardian must register them, agree to these terms on their behalf, and give the consents we ask for. The parent or guardian is responsible for the information they give us and for their child's conduct at sessions.

Ukurikira is an open run at a public court and young people may show up on their own. Parents and guardians are responsible for deciding whether their child attends and for supervising them there.

6. Waiver forms, and which document wins

Some programs require you to sign a separate form before you play. Players in The REC sign a waiver and release of liability before each season. It covers assumption of risk, release of liability, consent to emergency medical treatment, a media release, the code of conduct, payment, and how disputes are handled. Read it properly before you sign it. The House League will have its own form for parents and guardians, to be signed before the first session.

Where a signed form and these terms say different things, the signed form governs. These terms sit alongside it and do not replace it, cut it down, or add conditions to it.

7. Accurate registration information

Give us true, current and complete information when you register, and tell us when something changes, especially your phone number and any medical condition that our coaches should know about. We rely on what you tell us to run safe sessions. We can suspend or cancel a registration built on information that turns out to be false.

8. Code of conduct

TCL is a community space. When you are at a TCL session or in a TCL group chat, you agree to:

  • respect players, coaches, referees, staff and neighbours;
  • play hard and play fair, and accept officials' decisions;
  • wear proper athletic footwear on court, every session, no exceptions;
  • keep away from violence, threats, harassment, discrimination and abusive language;
  • stay off drugs and alcohol at sessions;
  • look after the courts, equipment and the venue;
  • follow the rules of whatever venue we are using.

9. Suspension and removal

We can warn, suspend or remove any participant, and remove anyone from a TCL group chat, for breaking the code of conduct or for behaviour that puts other people at risk. Serious incidents can mean immediate removal.

Removal for conduct does not entitle you to a refund of any fee you have paid.

We keep written records of incidents, warnings and suspensions so that decisions are consistent and fair. Those records are covered by our Privacy Policy.

10. Free programs, fees and refunds

Ukurikira is free to play. Other programs may carry a fee. Where a program has a fee, full payment is required before you take part, and unpaid registrations can be cancelled. We publish the amount, what it covers, how to pay, the deadlines and the refund rules for each program before registration opens, and those published terms apply to that program. We do not take payments on this website today.

11. Photos, video and your likeness

We film and photograph our sessions and publish that content on TCL social media and this website. By taking part, you agree that we can use your image this way. For programs with a signed form, that form contains the media release that applies to you, and it may grant TCL broader and longer-lasting rights than this page describes. For youth players, media consent comes from a parent or guardian.

Whatever a signed form says, our practice is that if you ask us to take content featuring you down from our own channels, we take it down. Message us on Instagram, TikTok or WhatsApp. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

12. Our name, marks and content

The Community League name, TCL, Ukurikira, The REC, The House League, our logos, jerseys, designs, photos, video and the text on this site belong to The Community League, Ltd. or to the people we license them from. You may share and link to our content as it is published. You may not copy it, sell it, put it on merchandise, or use our name or marks to suggest we back a product, an event or an organisation, unless we agree in writing.

13. Content you send us

If you send us photos, video, a message, a review or an idea, you confirm it is yours to send and that it does not break anyone else's rights. You give us permission to use it on our channels to promote TCL, and you keep ownership of it. We can decline to use anything, and we can take down anything we have published. Do not send us content that is abusive, dishonest, or that shows someone who has not agreed to appear.

14. Other platforms and links

We use Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn, and we link to them. Those services are run by other companies under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not control them, we are not responsible for them, and we cannot promise they stay available or keep working as they do today.

15. Risk and limits on our liability

Basketball carries a real risk of physical injury. You take part at your own risk. Please read our Disclaimer, which forms part of these terms.

To the fullest extent Rwandan law allows, TCL, its directors, staff, volunteers and partners are not liable for injury, loss or damage that we did not cause, including injuries that come from the ordinary risks of playing basketball, the acts of other participants, the condition of a venue we do not own, personal property that is lost or stolen at a session, or a session that is changed or cancelled. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our own gross negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that Rwandan law does not allow us to limit. Where you have signed a form that sets wider limits, that form governs, to the extent Rwandan law upholds it.

16. Indemnity

If a claim is brought against TCL because you broke these terms, broke the code of conduct, or injured someone or damaged property through your own deliberate or reckless act, you agree to cover the reasonable costs we face as a result, to the extent Rwandan law allows.

17. Changes to these terms

We update these terms as TCL grows, and the date at the top shows the current version. When a change is significant we will say so on the website and in our groups. Taking part after a change means you accept the updated terms.

18. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Rwanda.

If you signed a form for a program and that form sets out how disputes are resolved, follow that process first. It applies to anything arising from your participation in that program. Where no signed form covers the dispute, it goes to the competent courts of Kigali, Rwanda.
