Most of the people TCL pays started out as volunteers.

Four runs a week need a crew. Our coaching staff needs coaches. And when a job opens up here, this is where it goes first.

Volunteer with us

Help us run sessions. No set days, work at your local court, and never on your own.

Every Ukurikira run needs two referees and someone on event support, and there are four of them a week. That is a dozen slots before you count The REC or The House League, both of which run on volunteers too.

You do not have to commit to set days.

We are building a bench deep enough that nobody has to be there every week. You tell us where you are and what you can do, and we call when there is a session near you. Say no and someone else takes it. Say yes often and you will get asked more.

You work at your local court.

Most volunteers cover the runs closest to them. Transport is the thing that kills good intentions, so we do not ask you to cross the city.

You are never running a session alone.

Every TCL session has a member of paid staff on site. You are part of a crew, not the person holding it together.

Under 18?

You are welcome. We need your parent or guardian to agree, and there are a few things you will not be asked to hold, but the whistle, the board and the check-in table are all yours.

Media and content volunteer

Cross-programme · Event · Unpaid

Shooting at runs and events, to a brief from our Media Producer. Photo and short-form video, the stuff that makes TCL look like what it is.

Bring your own phone or camera. You do not need a portfolio, you need an eye and a willingness to shoot what the brief asks for rather than what you feel like shooting.

Where it leads: paid media work at TCL happens job by job rather than as a standing position, so this is not a fixed path to a wage. What it is, reliably, is a body of work with a real organisation and credited output.

More details

Where this goes

  1. Start by getting in the game.

There are far more ways to be part of basketball than playing it, and volunteering is how you find out which one is yours. You pick up a craft, you are on court every week, and you become someone we know by name. These roles are unpaid, and what they give you is access: to the game, to the people who run it, and to a track record with a real organisation.

  2. You get paid when you are reliably good.

Referees who can referee get paid to referee. Scorekeepers who are consistent get paid to keep score. It happens because you proved it at Ukurikira first.

  3. You get a seat when you are consistently excellent.

Most of the people TCL pays today started as volunteers. Not some. Most. It is not a promise, and it is not rare either.

Ukurikira is free to play and free to work. That is exactly why it is where we can afford to find out whether someone is good.

We count what you put in

Every session you support counts, whatever you did that night. Referee twenty and work check-in at thirty and you are at fifty. The further you go, the more you get back.
