Most of the people TCL pays started out as volunteers.

Four runs a week need a crew. Our coaching staff needs coaches. And when a job opens up here, this is where it goes first.

Coach with TCL

The House League and The Lab · Always open · Screened

TCL coaches young players in The House League and develops them in The Lab. Coaching hours are hard to come by in Rwanda, and we are building a coaching staff rather than filling shifts.

There are two ways in.

  1. If you already coach. FERWABA or FIBA certification, or real experience in a programme we can look up, and you can join as a paid coach. Bring what you have and we will talk about where you fit.
  2. If you are starting out. Come in as an assistant coach, unpaid, working alongside a paid coach on the floor. You take a group, run a drill, and learn the job from someone doing it. When our Technical Director is satisfied you can coach, you get paid to coach.

Everyone is screened first, both doors. Our Technical Director assesses every person who ends up on a court with our young players. That is a conversation before your first session, not a formality afterwards. Coaching children is something TCL certifies rather than assumes, and we would rather be slow about who gets that access than casual about it.

This one asks for consistency. Unlike our volunteer roles, coaching is not drop-in. Young players are developing against a plan, and that only works if the same face turns up. Expect to commit to a season.

You are never alone with a group. Assistant coaches work with a paid coach on the floor, always.

Under 18 and want to coach? The same two doors apply, and the same screening. Younger coaches are placed with younger players, which is the Technical Director's call.

Where this goes

  1. Start by getting in the game.

There are far more ways to be part of basketball than playing it, and volunteering is how you find out which one is yours. You pick up a craft, you are on court every week, and you become someone we know by name. These roles are unpaid, and what they give you is access: to the game, to the people who run it, and to a track record with a real organisation.

  2. You get paid when you are reliably good.

Referees who can referee get paid to referee. Scorekeepers who are consistent get paid to keep score. It happens because you proved it at Ukurikira first.

  3. You get a seat when you are consistently excellent.

Most of the people TCL pays today started as volunteers. Not some. Most. It is not a promise, and it is not rare either.

Ukurikira is free to play and free to work. That is exactly why it is where we can afford to find out whether someone is good.

We count what you put in

Every session you support counts, whatever you did that night. Referee twenty and work check-in at thirty and you are at fifty. The further you go, the more you get back.
